Car Got Towed: This is why I wasn't too upset

Bad things that Happened this semester:

-Car Got Towed

-Electricity went out this morning

-Parking ticket (seriously though St. Paul!)

Bad things happen.  Let's get over it and make good stuff happen.

What things have you spent too much time worrying over?

Finals Week: 4 Reasons why you need Sleep + Aurorae Yoga Mat Giveaway

I have three yoga mats, two are Aurorae and I have to say that they are my absolute favorite, go to mats.  They are a lot thicker than the average yoga mat, and they have a more cushy feeling, which I prefer when I am relaxingly doing yoga.  They have good grips, so you don't have to worry about slipping and sliding when things get sweaty during downward dog!

Aurorae asked me to try out their newer mat, the Northern Lights.  It comes in gorgeous ombre patterns, and I received the gray ombre, which I will be giving away today!

Sleep is hard in college.  Especially during finals.  There is so much to do, and not enough time to do it all.  I'm a huge promoter of sleep because it does all kinds of crazy things for us:

1) When we are sleeping we are learning, sleep locks in what we've been studying and keeps it for our long term memory.

2) Sleep fights sickness, why do you think our Professors don't get sick like we do?  They get enough sleep.  It's some crazy high number like 70% more likely to get sick if you get less than 8 hours of sleep a night!
3)  Without sleep you can die. Seriously.

4)  Our body temperature naturally drops when it want's us to sleep!  The best temperature to keep rooms at during bed time is 65 degrees.

My favorite way to get ready for sleep after studying all day (I always feel all antsy and hyper when it's time to go to sleep after studying all day, not active enough) is to do some yoga.  I like to turn on some ocean waves music and these and do some downward dog/child poses.  Here is a great post from Huffington Post on some of the best yoga poses to do before you go to sleep.

How many hours of sleep did you get last night?

Aurorae is amazing and they are giving away the gorgeous Northern Lights yoga mat above!  Enter below!

Keira Knightley on Fairytales

Keira Knightley has been my favorite actress for years.  She embodies an extremely talented, beautiful lady and a feminist all in one.  She says awesome things like this:

"I think it's great that the discussions are finally being allowed to be had [about feminism], as opposed to anybody mentioning feminism and everybody going, 'Oh, fucking shut up.' Somehow, [feminism] became a dirty word. I thought it was really weird for a long time, and I think it's great that we're coming out of that."
Harper's Bazaar UK February 2014 Issue"

Keira Knightley stands up for issues like Domestic Violence and anorexia.  She isn't afraid to call people out for being to focused on beauty and for going too photoshop heavy (King Arthur!).

#1 thing to do in College to look Good to Employers

The Awkward thing about finding a job after college is that you really have nothing to show.  The company is taking a gamble on you, and their are thousands of others that have the same exact degree as you that they could just as easily take a gamble on.  So why would they choose you?

Sara Blakely, the found of SPANX (yeah you can trust her, she knows what she's doing!) said "I did not have the most experience in the industry or the most money, but I cared the most."

This is important in your career, but it is equally important in what you do in college.  You NEED to take a role of responsibility in college that you are clearly passionate about and that you can look your interviewers in the eye and make them know that you are a valuable piece of college gamble and are worth the risk.

This involves more than just being a part of a club.  RUN THE CLUB.  Bring your ideas to the table, collaborate, lead.  Use what your learning.

Your only option isn't just starting a club, you could do anything.  Follow your passion, do something to show you will work so hard and won't stop.

Hows Toys Ruined our Career Choices

When I was a little girl I would spend countless hours playing barbies and polly pockets, I would design little outfits out of leaves and twigs that I found in the woods and make huts for them out of branches and moss.  These were some of my first toys and my most memorable play experiences, and to this day I question if a better college path for me would have been to go to SCAD in Savannah Georgia for Fashion Design.

Research shows that the toys children grow up playing with influence the career path they choose.  Often Engineers will remember playing with legos or tinker toys when they were little, and fashion designers will have played with dolls and barbies.  Isn't that interesting?  How influential the toys we played with affect the rest of our lives, our careers?!

The toys that children play with when they are little, are shown to limit the career paths that they eventually choose between when they reach college.  Like I said earlier I played with polly pockets and barbies, and yes, I definitely considered going into fashion design.  The thought of being an Engineer never crossed my mind, what if I would have tinkered with legos and played with the GoldiBlox zipline girl instead of barbie dolls?  Might I have become a master at small engine repair like my brother is or an Engineer?

I don't think it's bad for a girl to go into a women dominated field, such as fashion design, what I do this is bad is when girl haven't been exposed to the idea of being anything else.  All the choices need to be there.  Being an engineer or programmer should be a reasonable choice that she can consider.

I feel that when we are little, we play play play.  Play with barbies, play with legos, play with tinker toys, and then we start school.  We don't play or explore, we do what we are told to do and play the sports that the school offers us.

And then we hit graduation.  Time to decide on our majors.  What are our interests?  What do we like to do?  The last time we really had our "own" interests was when we were playing with our toys as little girls and boys.  This directly reflects the career path we choose.

What if girls had engineer type toys like these GoldiBlox toys to play with when they are little and boys had design kits?

What if kids continued being exposed to play and choices and unique experiences throughout their high school years?

What if high school graduates weren't expected to decide their life path the second they graduate from high school and could take a year to play and explore and discover themselves?

Would there be more female engineers in a world that is changing in this direction?  Would more guys feel like they can choose a design path?  This could be the beginning to the end of gender inequality.

What toys did you play with when you are little?  Do they reflect your college major or career path?
